If you’re considering a hair transplant as an African American, you need to know that your situation requires a different approach to other types of hair.
Within this article, I will cover three critical facts about an African American Hair Transplant you should know.

I’ve worked with African American patients for many years within our clinic, so the information I am about to share with you is based on real-life experience with actual hair restoration patients.

Let’s return to our topic and start with the first fact you should know about Afro hair transplants.
Extraction Protocol
The first critical aspect of an African American Hair Transplant involves the Extraction protocol.
Let me explain this.
The extraction protocol refers to the way grafts are extracted.
With Afro-type hair, this needs to be done differently.
This has to do with the shape of the afro hair follicle.
Afro hair follicles have a curved shape and are not straight.
When the follicles are released from the skin through the punches, it’s critical not to enter the punch too deep into the skin.
If the punch is entered too deeply into the skin, it can cut the follicle and damage it.
You can guess what this means.
A damaged hair follicle might grow weak or not grow at all.
Secondly, the grafts need to be pulled out with more care.
The shape of the follicle requires a slight curve in the pulling out of the graft to prevent damage.
African American extractions are considered to be the most difficult ones.
You need to ensure the clinic has plenty of experience dealing with African American Hair Transplants.
What is the next critical factor to know?
Let’s continue and find out.
Best Method for African American Hair Transplant
Another critical factor to consider is the method to be used for afro hair transplant.
We have three methods to opt for hair restoration: FUT, FUE, and DHI.
The FUT is outdated and offers no value, so that should not be an option.
This is my opinion, so feel free to dig deeper yourself.
So this leaves us with the DHI and FUE.
Some DHI experts believe the method to be a good option for afro hair.
I’m afraid I have to disagree with them.
The tip of the DHI pens are straight and can cause the follicle to be damaged when placing them in the tip.
There’s also a risk of damaging the grafts while implanting them using the DHI Choi implanter pen.
The FUE Method is the best hair transplant method for African American Hair restoration.
Let’s continue with our third and final fact about afro hair transplants you should know.

Hairline Design
Hairline design is another critical factor that deserves attention in Afro hair transplants.
Most of the African American patients I’ve dealt with prefer a straight hairline.
We normally consider a straight hairlines as something that looks unnatural.
However, a straight hairline is standard with Afro Hairstyles.
And it doesn’t look unnatural at all.
The surgeon must understand this esthetical detail of afro hair transplantation for the most natural outcome.
This is the third and final fact you should know about African American Hair Transplants.
