Before we dive in with the basics, let me quickly introduce myself.

What is PRP?
PRP stands for Platelet Rich Plasma.
The plasma in PRP is your own blood plasma.
Your blood plasma contains platelets. Platelets play an crucial role in healing the body.
They are also rich in growth factors which triggers cell repair.
PRP treatments are used for various conditions including post surgical healing and cosmetic surgeries.
PRP is also used a as a hair treatment which is our focus for this article.
Lets continue by viewing how a PRP hair treatment works.
How does PRP hair treatment work?
To get the PRP plasma, a sample of blood is taken first.
This blood is placed in a centrifuge which spins at high velocity. The spinning separates the platelet rich plasma from other blood components.
Once we’ve separated the plasma from the blood the plasma is transferred to injectables.
The PRP is than injected to the hair zones where the patient is suffering from hair thinning or weakening hair.
I’ve explained the basics of PRP and how it works as a hair treatment in the simplest way possible.
Lets continue with actual questions we het asked by our patients at our clinic.
Does PRP Regrow hair?
PRP can Regrow new hair depending on the hair loss stage you’re in.
If you’re suffering from permanent hair loss which means the hair is gone completely PRP wont be any effective and you cant expect any new hair to grow.
However is the hair loss is recent there’s a chance for the PRP hair treatment to regrow hair.
How long does PRP Last for?
The effect of PRP will last for 2-3 Months which can vary based on your personal situation and the severity of your hair problems.
A PRP hair treatment is therefore not permanent. You will need continuous PRP sessions to maintain the gain from earlier treatments.
What are the side effects of PRP?
Here’s an overview of the most common PRP side effects:
● Infection
● Swelling
● Pain at treatment site
● Allergic Reaction
● Bruise
● Nerve Damage
What are the disadvantages of PRP?
PRP has its limitations when it comes to hair treatments. The treatment does not offer any solution to permanent hair loss.
It’s limited in its effect when it comes to fighting hair loss.
PRP is more effective in hair growth than fighting hair loss.
Its a costly treatment options.
Most people will need several session initially and continue taking PRP sessions on the lung run to enjoy the gained benefits from earlier treatment.
The cost can be thousands if dollars on the long run.
PRP can be painful as it involves several injections in the scalp when injections the plasma.
Is PRP better than Minoxidil?
PRP is better than minoxidil when it comes to growing hair.
However Minoxidil is better than PRP regarding fighting hair loss.
The have different functions so it depend on the function and the need of the patient to determine which solution is better when compared.
Can PRP worsen your hair?
We have seen cased where PRP worsened the hair of a patient.
This was always of temporary nature and the hairs would improve and get better than the initial status before applying the treatment.
We believe this is related to the hair follicle focusing on growing stronger again before it can improve the quality of the hair.
A similar behavioural pattern is seen after a hair transplant with transplanted hairs.
Transplanted hairs will generally fall out first before the follicle can produce new hairs.
Why is my hair loss so much after PRP?
There can be two reasons for your hair loss to worsen after PRP.
Once reason can be related to what I covered above.
So it might be related to the hair follicle gaining strength first before producing new healthy hairs.
The second reason might not be related to the PRP hair treatment at all.
You might be in an active hair loss cycle unrelated to the PRP treatment.
Will my hair thicken after PRP?
PRP is effective in thickening the hair.
This might be the biggest benefit of PRP, it help strengthening and thickening your hair.
Yet you should understand that your personal hair situation is the main determinant in this.
The impact can vary a lot on individual bases.
What is the success rate of PRP?
This will depend weather you are referring to hair loss or hair thinning which are not the same thing per se.
PRP is effective for hair thinning and based on our experience has a success rate of 80% plus.
PRP’s success rate for hair loss is a different story.
Its less effective to combat hair loss.
We’ve seen the success rate to be around 35% to combat hair loss.
How many PRP sessions are needed to get results?
We advice our patient minimum 4 to 6 sessions for the initial 4 months to get the best possible effect with PRP as a hair treatment.
